Regional Air Transport The Territory is such a BIG place that quite often travelling by air is the simplest and easiest alternative. Historically the Northern Territory has relied on its aviation network for communication, transport, and delivery of urgent supplies, not to mention the services of the Royal Flying Doctor. From bush air strips to international air terminals, from scenic charters to scheduled commuter services, from helicopters to luxury jets, the Northern Territory is particularly well served to cater to the needs of the regional air traveller. Darwin The biggest and only international airport in the Northern Territory is in Darwin. Regular daily international flights, as well as direct flights from most Australian capital cities and Cairns make this airport constantly busy. Regional flights are also available to Katherine, Jabiru, Alice Springs, Ayers Rock, Tennant Creek, Nhulunbuy and the Tiwi Islands. Scenic flights are also available from Darwin, Pine Creek, Batchelor and Jabiru.
Alice Springs Flying into Alice Springs is an experience in itself. Central Australia has two major domestic airports. You can fly direct to Alice Springs from any major capital city and direct to Ayers Rock from Perth, Sydney or Cairns. This is made possible by the two main domestic carriers, Qantas and Ansett Australia. Regional flights are available from Alice Springs to Tennant Creek, and are available through Airnorth.
Katherine And Tennant Creek Both centres have air terminals catering for light aircraft and inter-region commuter flights. Regular passenger services, scenic flights, day "safaris" on regional scheduled flights, and mail runs to outlying Gulf and Kimberly communities, are available. East Arnhem Land Region The airport is approximately 10 km from Nhulunbuy's town centre. There are regular daily jet services from Darwin and Cairns with connections for international and domestic airlines. There are a number of light aircraft charter services to remote communities throughout Arnhem Land and also a daily prop jet service to Darwin with same day return. There are scenic flights available over the islands and reefs. Permits are not required if arriving by air, however all places off the mining and town lease require permits prior to arrival and are available from Dhimurru Land Management.
