Information For International Visitors Visas Visitors to Australia will require a visitor visa that allows for stays in Australia of up to 12 weeks. There is no charge for a visitor visa application, however a Form 48R must be completed. This form is available from any Australian Embassy or Consulate, or can be downloaded in Adobe Acrobat format direct from the Australian Department Of Immigration web site. It is recommended that you visit the immigration requirements section of Department Of Immigration web site, which also contains application information for business travellers, working holidaymakers, medical related travel, and transit visas. We have been granted the ability to issue electronic Australian visas for many different nationalities prior to arrival into Australia. We do charge a fee for this service, but please ask if you need our assistance, and application information will be emailed to you. Currency The local currency in Australia is the Australian Dollar. It is a decimal currency where 100 cents are equal to 1 dollar. Our various coins are worth 5 cents, 10 cents, 20 cents, 50 cents, 1 dollar and 2 dollars, while notes are issued in denominations of 5 dollars, 10 dollars, 20 dollars, 50 dollars and 100 dollars. The currency converter shown below will calculate the current equivalent of 1 Australian Dollar. Many countries have reciprocal health care agreements with Australia that allow for coverage under Australian health insurance for conditions which require treatment before returning home. Air Travel The Northern Territory is well serviced by both domestic and international carriers in accordance with its position as one of the world's premier tourist destinations. Only a few places have alternative power outlets, so it is a good idea to carry a small 110 V transformer and plug conversion kit. Telephone The Australian international access code is 61, and the Northern Territory regional (STD) code is 08. To call a number within Australia, it is necessary to leave the 0 out of the regional code. Gold and green public phones are for local, national and international dialing. Card phones are also available at the airport and selected hotels. Phone cards are readily available at the Tourist Information Centre, Beagle House, corner of Knuckey and Mitchell Streets and the airport, as well as other outlets. While on the subject of phone cards, we are an agent for Telstra prepaid phone cards, and these can be pre-purchased with your holiday package. They are A$25 each. Telstra provide a Visitors Guide To Australia which provides an overview of the Australian phone network, and a guide to services and facilties. Time Local time throughout the Northern Territory is Greenwich Mean Time plus nine hours and 30 minutes (GMT +0930). While some Australian states convert to daylight saving time during summer, the Northern Territory does not. Foreign Exchange Foreign exchange is available through Thomas Cook outlets at the airport and Smith Street Mall, Darwin City during business hours. The Tourist Information Centre at the airport and at Beagle House, Cnr Knuckey and Mitchell Streets has the same service available 7 days a week. There is also another foreign exchange outlet in Smith Street Mall and one in the Tourist Precinct on Mitchell Street. Banks The major Australian banks operate branches in most centres throughout the region with EFTPOS facilities at many retail outlets, although the frequency of locations diminishes with the isolation of the area being travelled. Opening hours are from 9.30am to 4.00pm Monday to Thursday, and from 9.30am to 5.00pm Friday. All banks are closed on Saturday, Sunday and public holidays. Currency exchange is available at all bank branches, Thomas Cook Bureau De Change, and selected retail outlets.
