Wyndham

Wyndham is the most northerly port of Western Australia and the oldest town in the area. Located just 101km west from Kununurra it was set up in 1886 when Western Australia had it's first gold rush at Halls Creek. The port was also used mainly in the cattle exporting market. Today, however Wyndham survives mainly on tourism.

Wyndham is home to the "Big Croc". At the entrance to the town is an excellent replica of the saltwater crocodiles that live in the Cambridge Gulf. The 18m crocodile standing 3m high would be great for your photo album!

The township of Wyndham is split into two areas. The original townsite of Wyndham Port is situated on Cambridge Gulf, while Wyndham Three Mile is the residential and shopping area of the town. The main street of the Port area has kept it's features from the early years including the Port Post Office, Durack's Store (Wyndham Port Hardware), the old Court House and Anthon's Landing. The main street is lined with Boab Trees as old as the town.

There's a port display of the early trains used to carry cargo to and from ships anchored at the wharf. Not far from here lies the S.S. Koolama which was a coastal trader sunk by Japanese bombers in World War 2. At low tide the ripples of the water will show you her position on the bottom of the Cambridge Gulf.

Wyndham Crocodile Farm is an established saltwater crocodile farm for the commercial use of the skins and meat. Set it scenic grounds the farm is open to visitors on a regular basis.

Gully Cemetery is one of Wyndham's oldest cemeteries where some of the graves date back to the late 1800's and early 1900's. There is also Bend Cemetery where the graves date back to the 1800's.

At Wyndham's Three mile there is a variety of sights to see.

Five Rivers Lookout is at the peak of the Bastion Range overlooking the Cambridge Gulf. From here you can see fantastic panoramic views of the Forrest, Pentecost, King, Durack and Ord Rivers as they all meet to run into the Cambridge Gulf.

It is not a well known fact, but Afghan Camels and their drivers serviced the Kimberley area in the early pioneering days. They had to cross the Great Sandy Desert from Central Australia to reach here, a feat in itself! At Wyndham there is an Afghan cemetery of unmarked graves of these heroic people.

Parry Lagoons Nature Reserve is a Wetland of International Significance as it is the stopping off place of a large population of migratory wading birds travelling between northern Asia and south Australia. It's a bird watchers heaven.

Shopping
Most shops open five and a half days and the supermarket is open for restricted hours on Sunday. Fuel is available seven days a week from two outlets.
